<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "belfort"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></span></div>

are of North East Somerset, Bath England. This area is where
Matilda's parents were born and lived all their lives.
When they married on 23 November 1823 their address was 15 Claverton Buildings,
Bath, Somerset, England. In my research I found a member of this
family living at that same address until 1917. Just think about it, for ninety-four years a family member resided at that
address. </span><br />

In 2001, I visited this beautiful city of Bath,
England. If I had only known then what I know now; 15
Claverton Bldg. is the only building of many numbered Claverton Bldg's that is the "least altered" bldg. today. It was built
in 1755 of Limestone ashlar: two story’s high, with an attic, and a basement.
In 2001, I actually could have visited this very dwelling. To see more click on this link:</span><br />

This is the only personal thing I have of theirs. I am presuming that because they can sign their name and not an x representing a signature (that is so commonly seen on old documents) they can read and write. How grateful I am to have original signatures. It has helped me in Identifying Edward in other important documents in comparing his handwriting. The next best thing would be a picture to surface of Edward and/or Matilda. That would be a miracle but, I believe in miracles. </span><br />

<span style="color: #660000; font-family: "aishwa"; font-size: large;"> Matilda is my dad's great grandmother. </span><br />
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: "aishwa"; font-size: large;">Dad (Vern Wherrett Tomlinson) told me his middle name Wherrett came from his Great-grandmother's maiden name on his father's side. Dads know, right?</span><br />
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: "aishwa"; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: "aishwa"; font-size: large;"> Several years after my dad died (1991), I found the Tomlinson family group sheet in one of Dad's drawers . As a newbie just learning how to research my family history, I took the information from the group sheet and what I was told by my dad as fact. </span><br />
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: "aishwa"; font-size: large;"> It took me two years to unscramble the information only to realize Dad 's explanation was was not a fact and the Tomlinson group sheet was not correct either. I was so persistent with what I was told to be fact only to finally realize it wasn't true. </span><br />
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: "aishwa"; font-size: large;"> Dad's father (George Wherrett Tomlinson) was named after his grandfather George Tomlinson born in 1822 in England, Matilda's second husband. Did George W. Tomlinson know it was his step-grandfather and not his biological grandfather? Maybe not or maybe he did and was told not to talk about it; a family secret.</span><br />
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: "aishwa"; font-size: large;"> What I learned from this experience is that all family stories need to be researched carefully to either clarify the family lore or to verify that it is the real story. </span><br />
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: "aishwa"; font-size: large;"> My research started in 1997; it has been an interesting journey since uncovering the fact that our family surname of Tomlinson is not our biological name. We are the Wherretts. </span><br />
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: "aishwa"; font-size: large;"> </span><br />
<span style="color: #660000; font-family: "aishwa"; font-size: large;"> Fact; we do have the surname Tomlinson in our line. It's on Dad's maternal line going back to his great-great grandmother Maria Tomlinson Cashmore. Below are pictures of all his "grandmothers" on his mother's side. </span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
It was purchased in 1913 for the Priesthood ordinance of giving my father a name and a blessing:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Vern Wherrett Tomlinson.<br />
<i>(<span style="background-color: #ebedee; color: #2f393a; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: 16px;">In modern revelation, parents who are members of the Church [Church of Jesus Christ of - Latter Day Saints]are commanded to bring their children “before the church,” where the elders “are to lay their hands upon them in the name of Jesus Christ, and bless them in his name” (</span><a href="https://www.lds.org/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/20.70?lang=eng#69" style="background: rgb(235, 237, 238); border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4e96a5; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: start; vertical-align: baseline;">D&C 20:70</a><span style="background-color: #ebedee; color: #2f393a; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , "times" , serif; font-size: 16px;">). This is why parents bring babies to a sacrament meeting, where an elder—usually the father—gives them a name and a blessing.)</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Vern's three living children Gary, Renée and Ted, seven Granddaughters and three Grandsons were given a name and a blessing wearing this dress.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After the thirteenth Great Grandchild it had become so frail it was time to retire the legendary Blessing Dress. My mother felt it was best that the oldest Tomlinson son should inherit Dad's dress. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today it's displayed in the home of my oldest brother Gary Vern.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If only I had the nostalgia; the appreciation; fifty three years ago AS I DO today, I would have taken a more professional picture of my children and grandchildren wearing this dress. (Nicole is pictured above in 'The Dress.') And I would have encouraged my two brothers to also encourage their children to take a more professional picture of their babies wearing Dad's dress. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In my mother and fathers' picture albums I found all of the pictures of babies that wore the blessing gown for this special ordinance. Some were OK but most are not OK. The picture was either out of focus or it didn't show the whole dress. Since I found the poem written by David O. Mckay it has really been on my mind of how important it is to preserve and cherish precious meaningful materialistic things for our posterity.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The above (out of focus) picture is me; the only picture taken of me in infancy. Mother was showing how much hair I was born with by using the mirror. I did not notice until scanning this picture for this post that I indeed am wearing Dad's dress. You can tell by looking closely at the sleeve and around the neck. Makes me happy; that this pic verifies Mothers statement that I was given a name and blessing wearing Dad's dress. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Below is a picture of my Grandson Christopher. I had to talk Christopher's father into wearing the dress for his blessing. This was in the spring of 1994. I promised his father Chris, that as soon as the blessing was over that his mother and I would take him out to the church building hallway and change him into his boy baby outfit. This memory sure makes me smile and as<br />
you see it made Christopher happy too.</div>

Here you will find lots of information about the Society. <br />
Also, here is a site on YouTube that further explains about the museum that you can tour at no cost. Take a look you will be surprised what you will find in this wonderful Museum.<br />

<br />
I want to make this short and to the point of why the picture above. Each month we have a lesson on different subjects of Utah Pioneers and April's lesson was one of my favorites this year because It inspired me to put this 'Shadow Box' together. The lesson was titled "Pioneer Clothing" prepared by Lynnette Pieper Hanson a member of the ISDUP Board. So, So interesting. The part about babies clothing and how both girls and boys wore long dresses brought me to attention. And especially the inclusion of a poem composed by President David O. McKay titled "A Baby Dressed In White ." <br />
David O. McKay was the ninth President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1951 until his death in 1970.<br />
The picture is of my father when he was six months old. What a chunk he was; after all he weight 12 lb. at birth. Also, you can see his baby ring hanging from a ribbon on the right side of Dad's head. Below his picture are pictures of his parents; George Wherrett Tomlinson and Ethel Hepworth who were married on 3 October 1912 then eleven months later; 2 August 1913 they became a family of three.<br />
David O. McKay has many wonderful quotes to his name of fame. You can search on the internet using Google Images or Pinterest and find many quotes but, this gem you will not find. All the more reason to be a member of DUP to come across this poem that could not be found easily anywhere else. <br />

Social media at it's best. This very creative picture was posted on my Facebook Messenger<br />
to share with me. I have never personally met the distant cousin who sent this to me but, doesn't matter I feel as though I know them and I certainly am happy to be in contact via the internet.<br />
<br />
Look closely at these beautiful sisters, Muriel and Janice (who certainly look alike) playing a card game with the family pet posing for the camera. Sister on the left is keeping score. Even their sitting posture is like a serious card player.<br />
<br />
The only information I have (at this writing) is that the picture was taken by their father James Lund in 1944. Muriel was nine years old and Janice was five years old. It was not until 1951 that another sibling was added, a brother John Gustave Lund who sadly died two weeks after Muriel's death in 2014.<br />
<br />
Mother of these children was Katie Rose Treloar (of the Hepworth line) a first cousin to my father. My father (Vern) talked about many fun times with Katie and her sister Pauline while living in Salt Lake City. Parents, Katie and Jim spent their married life in California where all the children were born and all are buried in California.<br />

If you know all about planning and attending a Gold and Green Ball where a Queen was crowned then I know about what age you are. Well maybe.<br />
I remember my parents being involved in the planning and decorating and dancing in many of these events while living in the Jerome LDS 2nd Ward in the Blaine Stake. <br />
On March 22, 1946 just five weeks shy of my fourth birthday I was a 'flower girl' attendant to the Queen as well as four other little girls. Also, little Richard Gibbons, he was the Crown bearer. I thought he was so cute with the biggest ears. His parents and mine were friends and on occasion we were playmates.<br />
I still have the dress that was made for me as you see in the picture and the picture of me wearing the dress. I am not happy. I remember my mother coaxing (begging me) to smile for this picture. She just didn't realize how scratchy the material was on my body even though it had a matching slip underneath. Where you see the little rosettes on the neck and the waist with ribbons hanging down, in the center of the rosettes were little buttons that looked like little beady eyes and they were scaring me. Also, it was too tight under my arms and no matter how many times my mother said to me "you will only be wearing the dress for one evening so get used to it and don't complain." Well, I didn't complain I just would not show joy on my face even though it was a big fancy event. <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"Evaun Anderson ....who was crowned Queen of the L.D.S. Second Ward Green and Gold Ball here Friday evening"</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This is the newspaper article about the Gold and Green Ball and still I am scowling.<br />
<br />
Gold and Green Balls today are not like what you see in this picture. Lots of planning and decorating and dance practices. It was a formal attire. The event was put on by the Mutual Improvement Association whose colors were Gold and Green which is where the name evolved from. Green stood for youth and growth; gold stood for purity and perfection. (This may be true today.)<br />
My mother worked in the MIA program of the LDS Church for years and was involved in this event on both the Ward level and the Stake level. Not only was there a Ward event but, a Stake Gold and Green Ball event followed soon after each Ward event was held. This year of 1946 the G&G Ball was held at the local Moose Hall. <br />
<br />
At 10:PM the floor show would begin. I do remember all the dancing. Adult couples would dance; maybe the tango or waltz etc. Then the 'All Girl' dance to the theme of that year. All dances were prepared weeks before the event which meant 'dance practices' for both adults and youth through the winter months.<br />
And, always a live orchestra.<br />
<br />
How to choose a Queen was done by whatever method a ward, branch, or stake chose. Sometimes it was by popular choice and voting, some were chosen because they sold the most subscriptions to the Improvement Era, or maybe they had the best record of meeting attendance or very simply drew their name out of a hat. I do not know when this practice of crowning a Queen ended. If you want to know more about Gold and Green Balls; Google it there's lots of info about it. <br />

It's that time of year again to post a tribute to my mother on her one hundred and second Birthday. This picture was taken in 1977. The year a granddaughter missed Mom's birthday by two days on December 3rd. Just couldn't wait two more days. I remember we were all rooting for her to join her grandmother in celebration of a birthday on the same day.<br />
At Thanksgiving time I happened to find these pictures of Lisa in one of the family albums and certainly took a second hard look. Then I uploaded pictures of my great-grand-daughter from Instagram who just turned two in September. <br />
Okay Folks. Do you see the resemblance like I do or am I just crazy? <br />
Let me know what you think. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is just one thing that can happen when you take a DNA test. I ordered a test from Ancestry.com several years ago. The results are posted on Ancestry.com and just this year a match appeared with Brenda from Utah. This person is on my father's paternal side. (Very rare connection) I was so excited about contacting her and she was thrilled when she got my message of our connection. To make a long story short this was the out come. She was able to find a picture of my second Great Grandfather Edward Aaron WHERRETT Jr.. I have been looking for a picture of him since the year 1999; the year when I finally unraveled the surname conundrum. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This second Great Grandfather married Mary Ellen Burns who is Brenda's Great Aunt so we are second cousins once removed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm only going to give a brief explanation of Edward Aaron Jr. at this writing and will be doing many posts on the 'soap opera' life of the WHERRETT'S at other times. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At age seventeen Edward Arron WHERRETT Jr. migrated with his mother Matilda GAY WHERRETT from Bath, England to America in 1864 on the ship Hudson and crossed the plains with the William Hyde Co and arrive in the Salt Lake Territory in the fall of 1864. In 1866 his mother, Matilda married George TOMLINSON. (More to this story later)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On 18 December 1871 Edward Aaron WHERRETT Jr. married Mary Ellen BURNS in the Salt Lake City Endowment House UNDER the NAME of TOMLINSON his step-father's name. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So Mary Ellen BURNS became Mary Ellen TOMLINSON. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My father did not know this. Even though his middle name is WHERRETT (Vern WHERRETT TOMLINSON) he thought WHERRETT was a grandmother's maiden name when the truth is WHERRETT was her first married name our biological name. Matilda (mother of Edward Aaron Jr.) maiden name is GAY. I plan on taking this life history slow so my family can keep it all straight. (Our grandfathers name is George WHERRETT TOMLINSON.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I would like to encourage everyone to take a DNA test. Last Christmas I gave my daughter and her children and their spouses DNA kits for Christmas. It's so fun to see the results. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Peaceful and serenity among chaos. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<u><b>Highlight of the summer is capturing this picture. </b></u>In all the chaos of the day Capri found the best place to lay her pretty little head and take a much needed nap and great-grandfather Earl was more than happy to oblige.<br />
<br />
It's been a busy joyful summer with grand-daughters and grandson-in laws and four little ones here for most of the summer. <br />
<br />
Summer was not without challenges for Earl and me. On our 54 wedding anniversary Earl went in for emergency surgery to shore up his femur in his right leg to get ready for radiation treatments of his bones. I won't go into the details but an hour surgery and maybe two days in the hospital turned out to be a four hour surgery and three weeks in the hospital. He just came home today.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Architect, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">It's 1930 and graduation time
at Albion High School in Albion, Idaho and Dad (Vern aka Butch) is President of
the Jr. Class. Mother (Verona aka Monie) is President of the Sophomore
Class. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Architect, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">I
have the 'yearbook' known as 'Albion Hi -Lights 1930' that belonged to my
mother. On each page a classmate or teacher has written a message of
friendship and wishes for a fun summer. The book has only twenty four pages
including the town Ads. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Architect, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Dad's
picture appears on four of the pages and on every one he has written Butch
across his FACE. You can see an example of this in the picture on the
left. Dad! What were you thinking! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Architect, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: Architect, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Being the Junior Class President Dad wrote a tribute to the graduating Seniors to be read at the </span><span style="font-size: 18px;">ceremony.</span><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"> You can see it in the background of the above picture. It was titled:</span></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u><i><span style="font-size: large;">A Senior as we Juniors see them</span></i></u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">Any person can tell a senior, why?</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">Because they are different from the rest of the high school.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">They act more dignified and sophisticated, they have passed their childish years that we </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">juniors have experienced. </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">They are on the brink of accomplishing the feat that every boy and girl look</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">forward to --------graduation.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">They have studied and successfully won the battle of education </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">We juniors think of the seniors as a our big brothers and sisters. </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">They have had much more experience than we and are well versed on the affairs of life.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">They held three fourths of the student body offices. Did they do it successfully?</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">I'll say they did, the student body has accomplished a great deal this year. </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">In athletics they were the best of the bunch.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">And in Glee Club and Drama they responded like stars. </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">It would be very easy to fix an algebraic equation for the seniors such as the best in everything</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">+ 4 years in high school = Seniors.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">As spokesman for the junior class we with the 1930 seniors the best of luck in life, we would like to see them in higher fields and if we could fill their shoes as successfully as they have filled them we will be satisfied.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i>
<i><span style="font-size: large;">WHAT A HOOT!</span></i><br />
<i><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></i>
<span style="font-size: large;">Love you Dad. </span><br />
